Van Wyk steps up with FC Kapstadt

Sixteen-year-old football talent DéJon Van Wyk is steadily carving out a promising path after signing with South African side FC Kapstadt three weeks ago.

Born and raised in Windhoek, Van Wyk’s football journey began in 2016, shaped by his natural passion for the sport and his parents’ encouragement. From an early age, it was clear that football was more than just a pastime.

“I used to drop kick rugby and soccer balls over the fence all the time. So yes, I loved football ever since. All the opportunities I got were because of my parents and the decisions they took around my development,” he said.

Primarily a left winger, Van Wyk is known for his pace, technical ability and strength on the ball. His versatility also allows him to adapt to different positions, while his crossing ability makes him a valuable attacking asset.

He began his development at Ramblers FC before moving to Athletic Club Football Academy, where he spent eight years honing his skills.

Van Wyk’s move to Cape Town came through a connection with former teammate Kabeer Jagot, who had signed with FC Kapstadt in late 2025. After competing against the club in tournaments in 2023 and 2025, Jagot helped open the door for Van Wyk when the club began searching for a left-footed player.

Following an invitation to attend trials, Van Wyk spent two weeks in Cape Town proving his worth, an opportunity he approached with focus and determination.

“The first training session, I was nervous, but I knew what the aim was, and I knew what to do. So, I had to give my best and hope for the best for the two weeks because I knew I was on trial,” he said.

Since joining FC Kapstadt, Van Wyk has had to quickly adjust to the higher tempo and technical demands of South African youth football. He notes that the training environment places greater emphasis on match analysis and structured preparation, contributing to his ongoing development.

Off the field, he credits his growth to God, his parents, sister and coaches. His journey has not come without sacrifice, but those experiences have helped shape both his mindset and discipline.

Looking ahead, Van Wyk has set clear ambitions for his career. In the short term, he aims to improve his performance, win trophies and potentially earn a national team call-up. His long-term goal is to play professional football in Europe.

Having already competed in high-performance leagues, including playing U/21 football at just 14, Van Wyk believes those early challenges prepared him for this next step.

Now immersed in a competitive and professional environment, he continues to focus on growth, consistency and making the most of every opportunity.
