President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has suspended Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force Joseph Shikongo on Tuesday afternoon over undisclosed issues, while simultaneously appointing Major General Anne-Marie Nainda as Acting Inspector General with immediate effect.

Sources at Presidency and Shikongo himself confirmed the suspension but refused to divulge further information surrounding the decision.

“I am home, I am fine and I am busy with other things. I cannot comment on the suspension. Please reach out to State House if you have questions. I am fine, thank you,” he said before ending the call. The Presidency through the presidential spokesperson later confirmed Nainda’s appointment in a statement issued yesterday. “I have today appointed Major General Anne-Marie Nainda as Acting Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force, in accordance with Article 32(4)(c)(bb) of the Constitution, which vests in the President the authority to make such an appointment,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah said. Nainda will serve in an acting capacity for one year, stepping in to lead the police force during the transitional period.

The President said the decision was informed by Nainda’s extensive experience and leadership record within the Namibian Police Force.

“Major General Nainda is a seasoned law enforcement professional with extensive experience in policing operations, administration and strategic coordination. She has served our country with distinction in several senior command roles within the Namibian Police Force,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said. She further described Nainda as a disciplined and trusted officer.

“Her professionalism, integrity and unwavering commitment to public service have distinguished her as a capable leader, and I have full confidence in her ability to lead the Namibian Police Force during this period,” the President said. Emphasising continuity within the security sector, Nandi-Ndaitwah added: “The maintenance of law and order remains a cornerstone of our democracy, and I am confident that Major General Nainda will ensure continuity, discipline and effective policing in the execution of her duties.” Nainda now assumes leadership of the Namibian Police Force at a critical moment, with the Presidency signalling a continued focus on stability, operational efficiency, and strengthening public trust in law enforcement.
