ONGWEDIVA – The Ongwediva Town Council has increased investment in infrastructure upgrading, repairs and sports development as part of its 2026/2027 budget plans.
Mayor Naemi Amuthenu said Council will continue repairing and upgrading important infrastructure to improve service delivery in the town.
Among the key projects is the refurbishment and renovation of Pump Station No. 1 at Hannover at a cost of N$1.3 million.
The Council has also budgeted N$7.4 million for the continued construction of the Multi-Purpose Sports Facility and the Leisure Park at Extension 11.
The sports facility project comes at a time when Ongwediva has no fully developed standard sports field, despite many local teams and athletes competing in competitions across Namibia. More than 20 sports clubs and individual athletes from the town take part in football, boxing, athletics, netball, volleyball and other sports countrywide
However, many teams still train at open grounds and school fields because of limited sports infrastructure.
Amuthenu said the sports facility and leisure park are important for youth development, healthy lifestyles, tourism and job creation.
Apart from sports development, the Council also budgeted funds for the development of the Oshipwatapwata Trading Area, expansion of office space and upgrading of the Ongwediva Open Market under Phase 2 and 3.
Other planned projects include the construction of a guardhouse at the oxidation ponds, interlocking at the Open Market Car Wash area, and the design of a tourism attraction site aimed at supporting local businesses and economic growth in the town.
