Speed Kills – Let African Unity Government Wait

Home Archived Speed Kills – Let African Unity Government Wait

By Charles Siyauya Kindly, allow me space in your newspaper to communicate my thoughts to our national leaders in Namibia on the formation of the African Government – United States of Africa (USA). Members of Parliament (MPs) and others let USA wait for the year 2130. I write to express my unhappiness with the fast speed at which the United States of Africa (USA) is being driven. It’s dangerous and speed kills. As such let USA wait for 2130 and then we can talk of one African government. I personally enjoy the comfort in Namibia which is compared to none in the whole world; kindly ask Angelina Jolie, she will testify to this fact. I strongly believe that it was not god’s mistake that I was born Namibian but this is the creator’s will that I must enjoy peace to the maximum and be at liberty to do what I want when I want. It was not by choice but it was the situation that put Namibia as the last country to be decolonized on the African continent. This gives us a golden opportunity of learning from other African countries’ mistakes in their attempts at nation-building. As young as 17 years of age, compared to Ghana’s 50 years of age, Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs and other Fellow MPs who support your bill, first be honest to yourself (if not to me) before you attempt to answer my question. And my question is: Is it possible, morally correct and acceptable for a school-going girl child of 17 years of age who happens to be your daughter to get married to a 50-year-old man, an MP for that matter? From Namibia’s point of view, this is tantamount to rape and punishable by law, so is the case of Namibia to the United States of Africa (USA). It’s by nature that I am not scared of the unknown or changes but your engineered change is too scary and Namibia has a lot to lose rather than to gain because of our infancy and lack of common grounds in our mother Africa. Critical View of Cost and Benefits Analysis I can’t afford to sacrifice and lose our peace and stability in Namibia, low crime compared to other African countries, space (small population), economic stability, immigration control, low pollution, our abundance of natural resources such as minerals , marine resources, land, think of our sound justice administration system, good governance, excellent democratic process, exemplary transition in leadership, sound reconciliation policy, good health care, our imaging and promising ACC (Anti-Corruption Commission) and make no mistake to break our borders loose. Should this happen we will receive corruption of the highest order. With regard to the envisaged USA, I am not a prophet but to be honest with you my Seniors in Parliament – Namibia is vulnerable and risks marginalization because of our thin financial market. USA will accelerate poverty, unemployment. Comrades and Friends we can’t be one, as a state of-Africa because of our imbalances in our domestic and foreign policies. I personally can’t imagine Africa without borders believe you me; some poor and unstable African countries will be empty, dry and migrate to Namibia. A million-dollar question is – do we have the carrying capacity to accommodate this influx if we are today failing to eradicate youth unemployment, poverty, cross-border diseases and crime and the chain is long of Namibia’s macro economic problems. Fellow Compatriots, the current African linguistic diversity will culminate in language barriers, what will be our Lingua Franca (Silozi hell no!). It’s a fact that most Namibians are illiterate because of apartheid and how do you expect them to communicate in Arabic or Siswahili because to live together means to communicate, accept and understand each other and the opposite leads to conflict and that is what we are inviting today. Take a closer look at the different religious beliefs, the refugee crisis, the unthinkable acceptance of homosexuality. Ladies, Gentlemen and others let USA wait for year 2130 because true love waits. The envisaged USA will sideline Namibia tremendously because other African countries have acquired already the technological know-how and skills which Namibia does not have that will put us as second-hand citizens flying in the economy class rather than the business class in our own country which my biological father died for. I refuse to accept that. We will be like endangered specees in our own country and employed as cheap labourers. I regret to be part of this generation which subscribes to the premature envisaged USA but I subscribe to the contemporary pan-African integration of the exciting present and any addition as propagated by your bill is not welcome. There is no unity beyond the current African unity and any further modifications or extensions or advances will be an attempted suicide. As an ordinary Namibian of the current generation, I refuse to be associated with bills and programmess which the generation of tomorrow will blame us for. I want to be on record that I distance myself and I have consciously openly communicated my genuine thoughts to you today. Hon. MP. It’s just a reminder to you my seniors, Ministers, Councillors, Decision-Makers and future leaders to be likewise, it’s not a mistake or secret or a rumour but it’s a tested fact that you are our servants and we are your bosses. You should carry out and execute the Namibian wishes and aspirations. Who delegated you anywhere to sell us to the rich powerful western African leaders? Who – from us the electorate – approached you and requested you to formulate this bill? Whom did you contact in Namibia or when do you intend to contact us for permission. The Namibian constitution has a provision for a referendum in cases of divided ideology. Kindly speak to the masses and gauge our views – that’s what I call participatory democracy. I fully support USA in 2130 but USA efforts must be conducted in a context of absolute transparency. This is not a domestic issue which can be easily scrabbled in the near future, should it not live up to your expectations but an international commitment which cannot be easily reversed. Be cautioned that the road ahead is bumpy, full of potholes and bushy and you must not drive us recklessly. Kindly look back into history and answer the following questions: How long did it take Americans to be the United States of America today, how long did it take the Europeans to be EU, why is the UK still holding on to its Pounds and not accepting Euros? Does our Vision 2030 provide enough room for a USA initiative? These are areas which our servants (MPs) should research on and report back to us -the Bosses – Electorates during community meetings if ever there is one by chance. The ink in the pen is finished and I will stop writing here. NB: At no point in time did this article of reasoning intend to offend anyone. If it does kindly receive my apology in advance.
