Rundu Chiefs chairman Agrippa Kamho Haindongo yesterday said his team is determined to return to top-flight football, as they currently lead the National North-East First Division log.
The Rundu-based outfit sits on top of the league with 31 points from 15 games played so far, closely followed by United Stars and KK United, both on 28 points.
With just seven matches left, the battle for promotion is wide open, as any of the top four teams could clinch the title and earn a coveted spot in the Debmarine premiership.
The chairman admitted that the current season is one of the toughest and most competitive. He added that Chiefs have proven this season that they are serious contenders.
“It’s a difficult season, as all the teams in the top four could clinch the title.
Look at the first four teams and their positions, as well as the points; I believe that with a tight competition like this, there should be no room for mistakes,” he said.
Rundu Chiefs last featured in the top-flight league during the 2017/18 season when they were relegated and haven’t returned since.
Reflecting on the league so far, he believes this is the time for the riverside club to gain promotion.
“I think it’s every team’s dream to play topflight football, and it’s the same for us.
I believe we have shown that we are a better team in the league, and I am confident we are going to win the first division and gain promotion,” he said.
“I think it’s up to us to remain focused and humble in our quest to win the title, and I think the key thing is for us to ensure that we don’t drop unnecessary points in our last seven remaining matches,” he said.
Local football analyst and seasoned journalist Hesron Kapanga said he believes the league is far from over.
I believe that any team in the top four could clinch the title. Because the log leaders could lose two matches during the weekend, and the other team will take over, I think the pool is still open, and anyone can take it,” he said.
