Chula, Gunners to use tourney to fine tune

Chula, Gunners to use tourney to fine tune

Zebaldt Ngaruka

Two premier league teams, Eeshoke Chula Chula from Ohangwena and Otjiwarongo-based Mighty Gunners, view their one-day pre-season tournament held in Tsumeb on Saturday as an eye-opener.

The games were played at the famous Oscar Norich Stadium, and the two premier league teams were joined by local teams Chief Santos and Kaltes Wasser FC and competed in a round robin format.

Eeshoke Chula Chula head coach John Shikerete said it was an opportunity for the technical team to see which areas needed improvement.

“It was indeed an eye-opener as we are now aware of the improvements needed in the tactical aspects and orientation and  game management,” he said.

Shikerete was undecided about the level of performance of his team at the tournament.

“You can’t expect all football fundamentals to be achieved, but we are aware of the several factors that can influence our performance, and we are paying attention to them,” said the coach.

On his part, Gerhard Hengari of Mighty Gunners said the tournament had served its purpose.

“We tested our new players, tried to formulate the team, and see our level of match fitness. My new players looked fine, although there is still room for improvement in certain areas,” he said.

Besides the windy conditions encountered, he said all went smoothly, and Gunners will continue with their preparations.

In the first game of the tournament, Mighty Gunners crushed local Kaltes Wasser FC 3-0, while Chief Santos lost 0-1 against Chula Chula in front of their home crowd in the next match.

Kaltes Wasser then drew 2-2 with Chula Chula in the highly competitive match.

In the next match, Chief Santos entertained the crowd beating Mighty Gunners with a 1-0 scoreline.

The last match of the competition ended in a stalemate as Mighty Gunners and Chula Chula failed to find the back of the net.
