The body of 87-year-old Theodor Volker was retrieved on Tuesday night from a riverbed in Dorado Park.
It is alleged that on the same day at approximately 15h37, a small hatchback vehicle with driver Volker and two women, aged 47 and 49, was swept away by strong flash floods.
“The driver was on his way to drop off the two women at a bus stop. While attempting to cross the river on Sean McBride Street in Auasblick, the vehicle became stuck. Water levels rapidly rose, flooding the car, and the current began to sweep it away.
The two women managed to exit the vehicle, but the driver remained inside. The vehicle, along with the driver, was carried away by the strong floodwaters,” Namibian Police chief inspector Eliphas Kuwinga said in a statement.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop near the bridge under Robert Mugabe Avenue, having been swept from Sean McBride Street through Jason Wanahepo Ndadi Street, covering over a kilometre.
Upon inspection, no one was found inside.
Kuwinga confirmed the retrieval of the body.
The victim’s next of kin were informed.
It is reported that Volker celebrated his birthday on the same day.
In similar events on 4 January 2025, flash floods ravaged the Otjomuise and Havana residential areas, leaving hundreds homeless.
However, no casualties were luckily reported.
The Khomas Regional Council and the City of Windhoek came together to assess the community’s immediate needs.
They provided the flood victims with temporary shelters while meeting their health, sanitation, security and educational needs. These victims, including families, were relocated to Farm 508 behind Okapale in the Goreangab area.
