Clubs demand terms for Maris Cup

A number of prominent local football clubs, including Young African, Okahandja United, Bucks Buccaneers, and Tigers, are currently in negotiations with the Namibia Football Association (NFA) over participation terms for the highly anticipated MTC Maris Cup, which kicks off tomorrow.

Initially, these teams threatened to boycott the tournament, citing concerns about the financial benefits. The clubs argue that the current allocation of N$30 000 for tournament preparations is insufficient, as it falls short of covering essential expenses such as transport and accommodation for players.

They propose that this amount should be increased to at least N$50 000 to better address their logistical needs.

Congo Hindjou of Okahandja United expressed frustration with the current allocation, suggesting that it should be reclassified as an “appearance fee” rather than preparation money. Hindjou explained, “We are already actively competing in the Debmarine Premier League, and our players are match-fit. This amount does not reflect the true costs involved in tournament participation.”

The dissatisfaction extends to the tournament’s prize structure, which follows a winner-takes-all model, with a grand prize of N$1.5 million. Hindjou and Young African’s Maleagi Ngarizemo have called for the prize money to be distributed more equitably, suggesting that it should extend to the semi-finalists. They argue that this adjustment would provide more meaningful support to clubs and ensure a fairer system overall.

Hindjou further highlighted the logistical challenges posed by the tournament’s impact on league scheduling. “Playing in the Maris Cup means the league will be extended by four weeks. Who will bear the cost of this extension?” he questioned.

Despite these concerns, the MTC Maris Cup is scheduled, with the following timeline: Round of 16: Saturday, 25 January, quarterfinals: 1 and 2 February, semifinals: 15 and 16 February and final set for 1 March.

To build excitement for the event, MTC has announced a press conference for the official handover of the Maris Cup kit today.
