Rapes

Teachers and learners of Kalenga Primary School (PS) in Grootfontein marched through the town on Friday to denounce incidents of rape, specifically involving learners, at the town.

A sizeable number of parents dressed in black also joined the march from the centre of town to the Omulunga Police Station.

In their petition handed over to Omulunga Police Station Commander Inspector Elifas Theophilus, community members called for increased police street patrols around Kalenga PS before and after school.

“Every year, a girl from our school or other schools is raped in this town while on her way to or from school, and this is traumatising,” community members said in the petition.

A teacher at Kalenga PS, Undjenu Mendez, said on 19 February, a 14-year-old Grade 5 learner was raped around 13h00 in the bushes behind the school yard while on her way home.

They requested that members of the Namibian Police and soldiers patrol the area around the school in order to prevent further rape incidents.
Community members also called on the Grootfontein Municipality to de-bush the area around Kalenga PS to make it easier for learners to spot suspicious individuals.

“Otherwise, we are thankful to the police that the suspect in this recent rape case was apprehended the same Monday and appeared in court, where he was remanded in police custody,” they said.

Theophilus promised to forward the community’s petition to Otjozondjupa Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Philip Hidengwa.

More than 1 400 learners attend Kalenga Primary School.
