Debmarine Desert Jewels eye glory at inaugural UAE Netball Cup

Namibia’s senior national netball team, the Debmarine Desert Jewels, is set to compete in the inaugural United Arab Emirates (UAE) Netball Cup, scheduled to take place from 15 to 21 June 2025 in Dubai.

This marks the team’s first international outing of the year, where they will go head-to-head against top teams from the host nation UAE, the USA, Kenya, the Republic of Ireland and Singapore.

Speaking at a press conference held yesterday at the Namibia Sports Commission, head coach Julene Meyer expressed confidence in her squad, stating that the team has undergone 10 days of intensive training and is both “well-prepared and well-conditioned” for the tournament.

“We are the highest-ranked team heading into this tournament. Our goal is not just to compete – but to win the UAE Cup and improve our world ranking. We’re also making a strong push to be included in the Commonwealth Games squad, which will be announced on 30 September. The players are working incredibly hard toward that goal,” Meyer said.

The squad includes two debutants: Loide Kanyolo, a rising star from the U/21 ranks who will play as a goal attack, and Melitta Hunga, who brings fresh energy to the defensive line.

Netball Namibia (NN) emphasised that the team’s participation in this international tournament is a significant milestone in their journey toward global recognition.

“This event is part of the official world ranking calendar, and it reflects the team’s growth, commitment, and the incredible backing from sponsors, stakeholders and the broader Namibian netball community,” read a statement from NN.

To honour the team and uplift their spirits before departure, Netball Namibia will hosted a send-off ceremony yesterday at the Namibia Sports Commission in Windhoek.

“This tournament presents a golden opportunity for our players to shine on the world stage and earn valuable ranking points. We believe the Debmarine Desert Jewels will make Namibia proud,” said the federation.

Conny Samaria, vice president of NN, echoed the team’s determination, stating:

“This is a defining moment for Namibia and Netball Namibia leadership. These are crucial ranking matches, and our aim is not only to compete but to conquer. This team is the beating heart of our sport and the pride of our nation.”

Team captain Anna Kasper extended gratitude to sponsors and urged Namibians to rally behind the team throughout the competition.

Adding his support, Christof Maletsky, CEO of New Era and a strategic partner of Netball Namibia, said:

“I would love to see the Desert Jewels at the Netball World Cup. The talent is there—what they need is more exposure and opportunities to compete at the highest level.” -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
