The annual Bank Windhoek Independence Betterball tournament proved to be a memorable affair as golfers gathered at the Windhoek Golf Club on Saturday to celebrate Namibia’s independence through sport.
Sponsored by Bank Windhoek, the tournament attracted an impressive field of 58 golfers forming 29 teams, all competing for top honours in what turned out to be a highly competitive event.
The duo of Cor Beuke and Liana du Plessis emerged victorious after delivering an outstanding performance to finish at the top of the leaderboard with an impressive 52 points. Their remarkable display ensured they walked away as the champions of the 2026 Bank Windhoek Independence Betterball competition.
Finishing closely behind in second place were Evelyn Paulino and Sesilia Nkosi, who produced a solid round to secure 51 points. The pair of Celonika Robinson and Chantel Visser claimed third position after posting 50 points.
In fourth place were Sponks Mohale and Lucy Mohale, who recorded 47 points after a count-out, while Bertus Damon and Llewellyn Husselmann completed the top five with the same score.
The competition also featured four nearest-to-the-pin prizes, which added excitement to the day. Dewaal Theunissen claimed the prize on hole three, while Toady Gurirab triumphed on hole nine. Marc Schafer secured the prize on hole 13, and du Plessis added another accolade to her name by winning the nearest-to-the-pin challenge on hole 17.
Aside from the competitive golf, the event was celebrated for its lively atmosphere and strong support from participants and sponsors. The prize-giving ceremony was among the highlights of the day, with many players walking away with prizes and lucky draw rewards.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, Corner Butcher once again treated members to refreshments, fostering a lively and celebratory environment throughout the day.
Organisers said the successful staging of the event reflected the spirit of independence and sportsmanship that continues to unite the local golfing community.
The tournament served as a fitting sporting celebration of Namibia’s independence while strengthening the camaraderie among golfers at the Windhoek Golf Club.
