I write this article to motivate you to take that course you’ve been thinking about; the one that is in line with the work that you are currently doing.

Many people, especially those working in large organisations such as banks, end up finding themselves in a position or department that is totally different from what they have studied during their tertiary education.

I will give a scenario of a qualified/admitted lawyer who is working as a procurement officer. The lawyer is excelling and is good at the job. At most times, you just need to understand the job to be good at it, and after completing university and being part of the workforce for some time, knowing how to do the job becomes easier.

The challenge with the above scenario is, as a lawyer, your experience, worth and value in the procurement department will be tied to that specific organisation. I say that because you do not have any formal qualification in finance/procurement, but the organisation gave you that opportunity because they saw and are aware of your capabilities (usually happens after you complete your internship or some type of short contract). A different organisation will not know that until they work with you because technically, your only qualification will be your grade 12 certificate. The law degree will not be considered, because it is irrelevant to the procurement position.

If you find yourself in a situation where your current work is different from what you have studied, equip yourself with the right qualification.

It is never too late to change careers. While at work, find a distance/part-time course that you can do, which should be relevant to your current job. This will not only make you a competitive candidate when applying for similar jobs, but will also ensure that you are remunerated correctly as well.
