Gladiators eligible for sport rewards

The Brave Gladiators’ win in the Cosafa Women’s Championship means they are eligible for a reward under the Namibia National Sport Reward Policy.

Chief administrator of the Namibia Sport Commission, Freddy Mwiya, said they will be guided on this and that they will receive monetary rewards for their exploits.

However, the reward policy guide does not have a clear category for the Cosafa competition, as it does for other competitions, nor does it specify how it is allocated to the tournament. Most of the highlighted competitions on the reward policy list are continental and world championships. Mwiya said that “the winners fall somewhere” on the list. According to the Namibia National Sport Reward Policy (2018), athletes and coaches who win medals at major international competitions are eligible for financial rewards.

For the Olympic Games or Paralympic Games, a team that wins a gold medal receives N$800 000, while the coach receives N$400 000. A silver medal earns N$500 000 for the team and N$60 000 for the coach, while a bronze medal earns N$350 000 for the team and N$40 000 for the coach.

At the World Championships, where more than 20 countries participate, a gold medal-winning team receives N$500 000, while the coach receives N$50 000. A silver medal earns N$300 000 for the team and N$30 000 for the coach, while a bronze medal earns N$200 000 for the team and N$20 000 for the coach.

At the Commonwealth Games or the All-Africa Games, a gold medal earns N$500 000 for the team and N$150 000 for the coach. A silver medal earns N$300 000 for the team and
N$100 000 for the coach, while a bronze medal earns N$200 000 for the team and N$80 000 for the coach.

At the African Championships, a gold medal-winning team receives N$500 000, a silver medal-winning team N$300 000, and a bronze medal-winning team N$200 000, while coaches receive N$150 000, N$100 000, and N$80 000, respectively. On the other hand, the Cosafa competition has no reward.  -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
