The President of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, welcomed the Brave Gladiators back to Namibia on Monday afternoon following their historic triumph at the Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa.
The players paid a courtesy visit to the Head of State shortly after arriving in Windhoek, where they were honoured for defeating South Africa in the final.
Addressing the team, Nandi-Ndaitwah said their victory symbolised a new chapter for Namibian sport and reflected the nation’s determination.
“These victories did not come by chance. They are the result of years of commitment, sacrifice and perseverance. They reflect players who trained even when conditions were not ideal. They reflect coaches and administrators who believed in the potential of Namibian athletes. Above all, they reflect young women who refused to accept limits placed before them,” said the head of state.
“This victory once again confirms that sustained investment in sport yields results. When talent is supported and opportunities are created, excellence follows,” added president Nandi-Ndaitwah.
She explained that under the Sixth National Development Plan, youth empowerment, human capital development, and inclusive growth are central pillars of the national agenda.
She added that as the government implements NDP6, we must make deliberate steps to strengthen sports development across the country. One of those steps is developing modern, accessible stadiums and sporting facilities in our regions.
“The building of new stadiums is not merely about hosting matches; it’s about expanding access. It is about ensuring that every young person in this country, regardless of where they live, has the opportunity to train, compete, and develop their talent in a safe and professional environment,” she said.
The Head of State further noted that improved infrastructure would allow communities to host competitions, stimulate local economies and create employment.
She praised the Gladiators for uniting the nation and raising the Namibian flag high through their performance and professionalism during the tournament.
