The Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) extends its deepest condolences on the passing of parliamentarian James Uerikua who tragically lost his life in a road accident between Okakarara and Otjiwarongo on Friday.
Uerikua who was also the former Governor of Otjozondjupa region was a staunch supporter of horse racing and his horse named Happiness participated in various racing competitions.
Among others, the departed MP played an instrumental role in the revival of horse racing sport in Gam settlement and led to the establishment of Gam Racing club (GR) which hosted several competitions in the isolated area.
NHRA spokesperson Chantelle Mouton said Uerikua was a remarkable leader whose humility, authenticity, and soulful nature left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
“We at NHRA acknowledged and honour his valuable contributions to the sport, as well as his unwavering commitment to uplifting those around him,” she sadly said.
Mouton added that the Uerikua dedication to community development and his support for the growth of horse racing in Namibia will always be remembered and appreciated.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those affected by this great loss. May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” said the spokesperson.
GR’s executive secretary Pahapaije Mbari told New Era Sports that Uerikua passing is a big loss to the racing sport in Gam, adding that he contributed immensely to the sport development in the remote area from his own pockets.
“We are shocked and in pain. His loss is not equal to anything. He was a brave man and we hope to continue with his leagcy in improving horse racing in Gam,” Mbari said.
Horse racing guru Uaraa Tjiho its painful to lose a young person like Uerikua but God’s will is not changeable.
“Before horse racing, we met in our Swapo party as comrades and he requested me and Iritjiua Murangi to assist with establishment of horse racing in Gam. We went there in 2021, arranged the race track and hosted successful event,” he said.
Tjiho who is known for his seasonal race horse Freedom Fighter recalled that Uerikua hosted all four racing competitions in Gam from his own pockets without sponsorship ranging from N$30 000 to N$110 000.
“He was wise, generous, respectful and good listener. He treated all people the same irrespective of the affiliations,” he said. Tjiho added that the late MP’s horse was trained by him and it sadly died two weeks ago after a short illness.
“It was painful for both of us and he had plans to buy another horse but sadly this happened. His was confident of replacing that horse as horse racing was on top of his heart,” he said. According to Tjiho the late also sponsored several football competitions in and Oviritje in Gam area.
“His interest in other sports and social activities are remarkable,” he said.
