The Divundu Village Council has identified the construction of houses as its most urgent development priority for the 2026/2027 financial year and foreseeable future.
In a recent interview with the New Era, Divindu mayor Kana Wensel, said there’s been a huge demand in housing from the community.
“Housing is one of the biggest challenges facing our residents. People have been crying out for decent housing, and this year we want to make meaningful progress in addressing that. We have engaged with various stakeholders and see how best we could get them to develop the town of Divundu and its demand for housing. I believe that is what is important to us and our people, and we are looking forward to implementing some of those crucial projects,” the mayor said.
Beyond the demand in housing, the council will be upgrading road infrastructure to improve accessibility and service delivery within the village.
Road infrastructure and connectivity are crucial parts that need urgent attention, because roads unlock economic activities, which makes them part of the crucial things on the council agenda, the politician said.
“We have more hospitality establishments here in our town and surrounding areas, which attracts a lot of tourists, and for them to reach here, roads need to be maintained. Such things bring in a lot of income and create job opportunities, as a lot of the locals are employed within that sector,” he added.
Additionally, job creation remains high on the council’s agenda, particularly in a community where unemployment continues to affect many households. “We want to work closely with stakeholders to create job opportunities for our people,” he said.
“Development projects such as housing and road construction can also help create temporary and long-term employment,” stated the politician.
He also emphasised the importance of partnerships with government institutions, the private sector and other stakeholders in driving sustainable development in Divundu.
Divundu has rapidly grown over the past few years. Last year, the council launched a N$50 million housing development which aimed at building over 100 modern houses.
