The Aminuis Zonal Athletics Competition, staged at Motsomi Primary School’s sports field over the weekend, has been described as a resounding success by organiser Edwin Kamaundju.

Six schools from across the vast Aminuis constituency took part in the prestigious track and field event. These included Rietquelle High School, Mokaleng Combined School, Chief Hosea Kutako Primary School, Chief Sophia Jacobs Primary School, Dr Fischer Primary School and host Motsomi Primary School. Athletes competed in various disciplines, showcasing their talent and determination.

A total of 133 athletes qualified for the upcoming Omaheke Regional Athletics Championships scheduled to take place in Gobabis from 13 to 14 March — an increase compared to last year’s qualifiers.

Kamaundju said the organising team ensured that all necessary equipment for the various events was secured in advance, which contributed to the smooth running of the programme.

“There was a great atmosphere at the sports field, and the attendance was superb. It was encouraging to see parents coming out in large numbers to support and cheer on these emerging talents,” he said.

He added that punctuality, which had been a challenge in previous years, was no longer an issue because schools adhered to the set start times. In terms of overall rankings, Rietquelle High School emerged victorious with 725 points, followed closely by Motsomi Primary School with 695 points.

Dr Fischer Primary School secured third place with 693 points. Chief Hosea Kutako Primary School finished fourth with 493 points, Mokaleng Combined School placed fifth with 465 points, while Chief Sophia Jacobs Primary School rounded off the standings with 200 points.

Rietquelle High and Motsomi Primary were awarded gold and silver trophies respectively, while Dr Fischer Primary received a certificate for finishing third.

A major highlight of the event was the presence of Aminuis constituency councillor Isando Kaverukua Kavari, who presented the awards and donated N$5 000 towards the team’s preparations. The councillor’s office will also provide meals during the two-week training camp ahead of regionals.

Kamaundju expressed gratitude for the sponsorship, saying it will significantly boost preparations, including purchasing zonal attire and ensuring athletes are fully prepared for the regional championships.
