Male netball player dreams of international glory

At 26 years, Shaponi Telwin Tjiuongua is quickly becoming one of Namibia’s most prominent male netball players, with aspirations of one day representing his country on the international stage.

Tjiuongua, known for his versatility on the court, played a pivotal role in the Namibian men’s team’s performance at the prestigious Africa Netball Cup. His passion for the sport is undeniable, as he describes himself as an all-rounder who is eager for an opportunity to showcase his skills in a country where male netball players are truly valued and recognised.

Tjiuongua’s journey in netball began long before he stepped onto the international stage. Born in Walvis Bay, he developed a love for the sport at a young age. “I would always find myself practising moves, even as a child,” he reflected. “Netball has brought me so much joy, and I am truly grateful to see organisations like Netball Namibia and Netball Africa pushing for greater inclusion of males in the sport.”

Having competed in a groundbreaking tournament, he expressed immense pride in his participation. “I cannot afford not to play. This was the first time I played at such a high level, and I am incredibly appreciative of the experience,” he said. “It was amazing, as we’ve only ever played against women before, and I was honoured to be the vice captain.

The tournament was a fantastic experience, and I am just grateful to be part of this growing movement in netball.”

Tjiuongua’s journey is reflective of a larger global trend, with men’s and mixed-gender netball gaining increasing popularity in countries like Australia, New Zealand and Samoa. These nations are setting the stage for the future of the sport, and Tjiuongua looks to these countries as inspiration, hoping that Namibia and Africa at large will follow suit in embracing male participation in the sport.

“I am an all-rounder, whatever position I am given, I give it my best. My goal is to take my netball career as far as possible, and to one day have the opportunity to play overseas.” His ambitions are not just for personal success, but also for the betterment of male netball in Namibia and beyond.

He acknowledges the support from Netball Namibia in transforming the sport, and creating opportunities for male players to participate in international competitions. “This is the first time males are going international in netball, and we hope that this is just the beginning,” Tjiuongua shared. “I believe that the transformation underway will lead to more programmes that bring men into the sport, even in rural areas.”

Furthermore, he would like to see netball added to the Olympic Games’ roster, an achievement that would cement the sport’s place in the global sporting arena.
