Aminuis athletic zone coordinator Zenaune Muharukua has expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance at the Omaheke Regional Athletics Championship held at Legare Stadium in Gobabis over the weekend.

The Aminuis zone sent a team of 108 athletes to the regional showpiece and returned home with a total of 33 medals, including five gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze.

“We are happy about our athletes’ display at the event. It was not an easy competition as all teams prepared well, and getting positive results from this is an achievement for us,” said Muharukua.

He added that at least eight athletes are believed to have met the qualifying standards, although the final list will be confirmed by the regional selection team. Muharukua also praised the strong support from the Aminuis community, saying the large turnout of supporters motivated the athletes throughout the competition.

“We are happy and hope this atmosphere continues at all sporting events in our constituency. We also received support from constituency councillor Isando Kaverukua Kavari and food sponsorship from Vena Trading,” he noted.

Among the standout performances from the Aminuis team was Johannes Makaatanna, who won gold in the long jump, while Mbapeua Kandji secured first place in the javelin event. Gamases Bianca impressed by finishing second in the 1500m race, while Vitjituaije Tjitare claimed second position in the discus throw. Muharukua said the team showed improvement compared to previous competitions but stressed that many athletes, particularly those from marginalised San communities, still need assistance.

“These kids are talented and if given the necessary support and attention, they can go far,” he said.

He also revealed that community members have proposed the establishment of an athletics club in Aminuis to keep athletes active throughout the year, a move he believes will greatly benefit the development of young talent in the constituency.
