The University of Namibia (Unam) has set a N$50 000 debt threshold under which senior undergraduate students may register for the 2026 academic year without settling their full outstanding balances upfront.
The measure was announced on Wednesday and applies to Namibian undergraduate students nearing completion of their studies.
Eligible students will be required to sign a formal payment agreement with the university, Unam’s manager for public relations and media operations, Simon Namesho, said.
“The arrangement allows the university to formalise outstanding balances while enabling qualifying students to proceed with registration,” Namesho said.
It ensures that students close to completion are not excluded, while payment obligations remain in place, he said.
Namesho said that students owing more than N$50 000 will be required to reduce their balances below the threshold before financial blocks are lifted.
Once this is done, students may register and conclude payment agreements with the university’s finance department.
Namesho reiterated to students to register promptly, noting that the academic year has already commenced.
“Payment agreements must be signed and submitted by 16 February 2026.
Failure to comply will result in restricted access to the student portal and may lead to deregistration,” he said.
From a financial perspective, the arrangement allows the university to retain senior students while converting historic balances into structured repayment agreements, he said.
UNAM said the measure replaces all previous announcements on payment arrangements.
“This is a once-off intervention. Students are advised to comply with the terms and timelines outlined in the notice,” Namesho said, directing students to further details on eligibility and procedures to the university’s finance offices and official communication channels.
