Nanso raises funds for #FixMySchool

The Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) hosted a corporate 7-a-side football tournament in Windhoek on Saturday, aimed at raising funds for its #FixMySchool initiative.

The tournament brought together 12 corporate teams, each contributing N$2 000 towards the campaign. In total, the event raised N$26 600, which will go towards covering material costs to repair and restore school furniture, particularly desks and chairs.

Beyond fundraising, the event also served as a platform to raise awareness and mobilise support for improving education infrastructure across the country. By engaging corporate entities, Nanso sought to encourage broader participation in addressing the challenges faced by many schools.

According to Nanso spokesperson Jessy Abraham, the #FixMySchool initiative forms part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to advocate for better learning conditions nationwide.

“Our learners are still learning on broken chairs and tables. Many of our schools face a serious resource deficit. To ensure that our learning spaces are dignified and conducive, we have launched this initiative,” she said. Abraham further emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in improving the education sector, noting that all stakeholders have a role to play.

“It is important for everyone to understand their role as stakeholders in education, whether as community members, parents, guardians, or learners themselves,” she added.

Participants echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the significance of contributing to a meaningful cause. Josef Shivute, captain of Saintz FC, one of the teams that took part in the tournament, said that while his team did not advance to the finals, their participation was driven by a larger purpose.

“Even though we didn’t make it to the finals, we are focused on the bigger picture, which is investing in future generations,” he said.

The initiative continues to gain momentum as Nanso explores more ways to address infrastructure challenges in schools and create a more conducive learning environment for learners across Namibia.
