National bowling championships this weekend

The annual King Price National Bowling tournament returns this weekend, with international participants expected to add excitement to the event.

The tournament will take place in the capital, starting this Saturday.

It will run until end of this month.

The event will see over 100 bowlers competing for top honours across various categories.

The categories throughout the week will include novice singles, veterans’ singles, mixed pairs, pairs, trips and fours for both men and ladies.

During last year’s competition, Christo Steenkamp claimed the men’s elite singles title.

Marietjie van den Bergh took home the elite’s women’s singles.

In the men’s fours category, Schalk van Wyk, Julian Viljoen, Gordon Damster and Dave Gibbons emerged victorious.

Van den Bergh, Susan Venter, Petro Breedt and Petta Anne Basford clinched the title in the ladies’ fours division.

Waylon Wentzel and Freddie Fouche claimed the top spot in the pairs category for men.

Van den Bergh and Breedt secured victory in the ladies’ category.

In a brief conversation with this publication, Namibia Bowling Association (NBA) spokesperson Michelle Crawford said this year’s event will be bigger and better, anticipating tough competition.

“The competition is starting on Saturday, and will run until next week. It’s different this year because we are expecting a large number of bowlers coming from South Africa. It will make the competition stiff,” she stated.

“We have a few bowlers who recently competed abroad. With the experience gained from those international events, we are expecting to see different winners in various categories,” she added.

The event will be played at various venues, including the Eros bowling club, Windhoek bowling club and the new Trustco United bowls club.

All final games will be played on 31 May at the Windhoek bowling club, situated in the government gardens in the heart of Windhoek.
