NSSU gears up for Athletics Championships

The Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) is gearing up to host the 2025 National Athletics Championships at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek early next weekend.

All 14 regions are set to converge in the capital for the prestigious national event, with Khomas region entering as defending champions after last year’s dominant display. Khomas secured 40 gold medals, 28 silver and 20 bronze to finish top of the standings, followed by Otjozondjupa in second place and Hardap in third.

Leoni van Rensburg, a representative of Team Khomas, expressed confidence in her team’s ability to retain the crown.  “I think we are ready to defend the title and dominate like we did last year. Many of our athletes are still in good shape after the AUSC Region 5 Games, and most of them will again be selected for the nationals. We took valuable lessons from that regional competition, and we’ll incorporate them into our preparations for this championship,” she said.

Nomin Westley, head of track and field at Athletics Namibia (AN), said preparations are at an advanced stage and promised a highly competitive championship.

“We had so many international competitions this year, and I believe all regions had a fair share of athletes who travelled abroad or competed at the AUSC Region 5 Games. That exposure will raise the competition level at the nationals,” he explained.

Westley further noted that the event will play a crucial role in talent identification. “Discovering new talent should be a continuous process. We should always look out for the next generation, especially at developmental events like this. With more international competitions still lined up before the year ends, this championship will be a perfect platform to nurture and scout promising athletes,” he added.

The championships are expected to serve as both a showcase for emerging talent and a vital step in preparing athletes for future international competitions.
