Oshikoto police commander, commissioner Teopolina Kalompo-Nashikaku, says a police officer shot and killed himself with a service pistol while on duty at Onkumbula Police Station in the Oshikoto region on Saturday.

It is alleged that the deceased started his official duty as a shift commander on Saturday at 14h00, and at around 16h00, he left the charge office for his room with the service pistol, and did not come back for knocking off at 22h00.

“The next day, the deceased was supposed to start duty at 06h00, but did not report for duty,” Nashikaku stated.

Nashikaku mentioned that his colleagues got worried when the deceased did not report for duty and began looking for him but couldn’t find him, in his room.

Later, they allegedly followed his footprints from the barracks to the nearest bushes on the station’s premises on Sunday at around 14h00.

Nashikaku said they found the deceased’s body still in uniform with a head wound, the service pistol next to him, and one spent cartridge at the scene.

The police are yet to release the details of the deceased, but his next of kin are informed.
