ONDANGWA – The Ondangwa Town Council said the multi-million-dollar Ondangwa Sports Stadium project is moving ahead steadily, with phases two and three of construction currently underway.
The project, which was first announced in 2022, forms part of the Council’s long-term plan to develop what is expected to become the biggest sports stadium in northern Namibia.
Its construction, which is planned to be completed within five years, is estimated at a total cost of N$70 million.
Ondangwa Town Council’s CEO Ismael Namgongo said the project aims to strengthen sports infrastructure and support the growth of sport in the town and northern regions.
Construction officially started on 6 June 2024, and work is now continuing on the tarred access road, ablution facilities, grandstands and other key infrastructure.
Spokesperson of the Council Petrina Shitalangaho Mutikisha confirmed that N$15 million has been allocated during the current financial year for the construction of the pavilion, ablution facilities, high mast lights and running tracks.
She added that irrigation work at the stadium is expected to start before the end of June, while the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The stadium is expected to have an overall sitting capacity of 20 000 spectators, and it is being developed to meet both FIFA and CAF standards.
The facility is designed to host different sporting codes, including football, athletics, boxing and netball. It is expected to provide modern sporting facilities for athletes and teams in northern Namibia. The development comes as sport continues to grow in Ondangwa, with many young athletes and clubs competing in national competitions across the country. The council also annually hosts the Northern Namibia High Performance Sport and Innovation Centre Tournament, reaffirming its commitment to nurturing talent and promoting community development through sport.
Meanwhile, the Council recently entered into an agreement with KK Palace Football Club as part of efforts to strengthen sports development and promote the town through football.
Council described KK Palace as a proudly Ondangwa-based team, further praising the club for its strong performance in the Namibia Premier Football League.
The stadium project has also received support from organisations such as the Road Fund Administration, NamPower and the Fish Consumption Promotion Trust.
