PDM: We are not salary collectors

The Popular Democratic Movement has come out swinging against a recent newspaper report, which seemingly questioned parliament’s effectiveness, including the role of lawmakers, particularly in the National Assembly.

PDM’s deputy chief whip in the National Assembly Elma Dienda said the article undermines the important role and hard work of fellow MPs contributing to the August House.

She said the country’s main opposition is committed to addressing the pressing issues Namibians face daily.

“We, as the PDM, have tabled ten motions in the year 2020, 19 motions in the year 2021 and 10 motions this year. The motions tabled are of great significance and affect the livelihoods of Namibians,” said Dienda.

“We would like to firmly state that the PDM MPs perform their required duties as entrusted by the Namibian nation. Our MPs truly represent the interest and issues of the Namibian people in the National Assembly with a great sense of determination.”

Dienda also added her party MPs tabled a motion on youth unemployment in Namibia, a motion to discuss the state of the sports fraternity in Namibia in terms of facilities, structures, budget and the creation of a culture of a fit and healthy nation.

Other motions tabled by her party MPs Dienda said to include a motion to redress the high levels of multidimensional poverty in the Kavango West, Kavango East, and Kunene, Zambezi and the Ohangwena regions as well as a motion to discuss the impact of the executive on the separation of powers.

Furthermore, she stated, it was the PDM that introduced a motion to discuss the challenges faced by the country’s public transportation industry during times of emergency.

“Our MPs have always been fully committed to their duties as elected by the people. We would, therefore, like to assure our members and the Namibian nation at large that we will continue to serve the Namibian nation with absolute commitment and dedication, “he said.
