Grain machine revolutionises agri-sector

In a significant breakthrough for the agricultural sector, an inventor has developed a revolutionary machine that tackles the age-old challenge of drying grain efficiently. Simbarashe Sam Dzveta, a mechatronics engineer with a diverse background in mechanical, electrical, and control engineering, has spearheaded the creation of a cutting-edge grain-drying system that harnesses heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) principles.

Dzveta, in collaboration with his workshop team at Duct Africa Steel Manufacturers, defied conventional HVAC norms by combining the indoor and outdoor units of an air conditioning system within the same room. By skillfully isolating and harnessing the effects of these units, they succeeded in designing a grain dryer that operates independently of outdoor weather conditions, making it ideal for drying grain during the night and rainy seasons.

“Our client had problems with drying grain during the night and during rainy seasons. As Duct Africa Steel Manufacturers, we had to find a solution within our scope of work, hence we had to design the grain dryer based on heating, ventilation and air conditioning principles,” he noted.

Dzveta highlighted that the machine cost about N$200 000 and it took the team three weeks to build. He added that the machines are customizable, depending on the client’s request and the features they want.

The key to the success of this ground-breaking system lies in its ability to enhance the evaporation process by creating an optimal environment. High wind, high temperature, and low humidity conditions are seamlessly achieved, resulting in an impressive increase in the drying rate.

With a focus on maintaining the highest grain quality, the team at Duct Africa ensured that the temperature remains at an optimum level throughout the drying process.

“The advantages of our grain-drying system are numerous,” stated Dzveta.

“We have improved the drying rate, allowing farmers to reduce drying time from 48 hours per batch to an impressive six hours. Additionally, our system enables drying during the rainy season and at night when sunlight is unavailable.”

The success of Duct Africa’s grain drying system has already been proven in real-world conditions. The company’s double-story flatbed dryer, the first of its kind, has been operational for over three months, delivering exceptional results for its client. Farmers have experienced a remarkable increase in drying capacity, with the system able to handle up to six tonnes of grain, compared to the previous two-tonne capacity.

“As a company in the HVAC industry, we are so happy to provide a solution to the agriculture sector to improve food security,” Dzveta expressed.

Moreover, the machine boasts additional benefits such as energy efficiency and portability. By utilising inverter air conditioning systems, the drying plant optimises power consumption while reducing emissions. Its portable design further enhances its versatility and usability across various agricultural settings.

The success of Dzveta’s creation has not only propelled Duct Africa to the forefront of the HVAC industry but has also garnered recognition within the broader manufacturing sector.

The company has been actively engaged in manufacturing a range of HVAC products, including ducting fans and kitchen canopies, while also achieving milestones such as introducing the first whirlybirds in Namibia and developing cycoclean filters for kitchen canopies.

As the machine continues to deliver outstanding results, Duct Africa plans to expand its reach by developing a rural model that functions without electricity. This ambitious endeavour underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and its dedication to addressing the unique needs of farmers in remote areas.
