Impalila crash victims named

A German family and a South African pilot have been identified by police as victims of the Impalila Island plane crash on Monday afternoon.

They are Thomas Rings (59), his wife Evelyn Rings (57) and daughters Alicia Maria Rings (19) and Paulina Lucia Rings (17).

The pilot has been identified as Nicole Minnie. Experts and investigators were expected to arrive yesterday afternoon at Impalila Island in the Zambezi region, to investigate and gather information to determine the exact cause of the deadly aircraft accident on the island.

The privately owned Cessna 210 aircraft plummeted from the skies around 13h15 on Tuesday, killing all five people on board. According to police, the aircraft was en route to Rundu but crashed moments after taking off.

Indications are that the aircraft took off from the Impalila island airstrip and crashed on the bank of the Zambezi River in Muwana village on Impalila Island. The director of aircraft accident and incident investigation, Magnus Abraham, told New Era details around the accident are still sketchy.
