Thrills and spills expected at Okahandja Derby

It is all systems go for tomorrow’s much-anticipated Okahandja Expo Derby horseracing event.

Race organisers promise nothing but blistering action from the country’s foremost racehorses.

Seasoned racehorses such as Starlile, Burundi, Von Trotha, Black River and many of the country’s leading horses will all be expected to grace the event at the town’s famous tracks under the stewardship of the Okahandja Racing Club and the Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA).

Speaking to New Era Sport yesterday, NHRA president Martinez de Waal said this weekend’s race is one of the biggest events on the Namibian horseracing calendar and spectators should brace themselves for some adrenaline-pumping action.

“I’m happy to say that our affiliate, Okahandja Racing Club have already put everything together for a spectacular race. A lot of the country’s top horses will be in action, so fans should expect great entertainment and joy,” said De Waal.

“We are also anticipating this competition to be tough and interesting, as horses will only partake in one race on the day, unlike with other races where we have horses competing in three different categories in one day.”

The president also shared that Covid-19 rules and regulations will be enforced on race day, with those in attendance expected to strictly wear masks and sanitise their hands at all entry points.

“Covid-19 is not gone, so we will enforce the rules and regulations at this event. Sanitisers will be available at entry points and all in attendance should wear masks,” he added.
