SADC zone in on Mozambique’s post-election crisis

Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders have called for urgent action to address the escalating violence in Mozambique.

Post-election unrest has led to deaths, property destruction and disruptions to trade and economic activities.

An Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit, held virtually on Sunday, was convened under the leadership of Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu Hassan.

In her statement, she said the meeting aimed to find solutions to the crisis.

The violence erupted following Mozambique’s October 2024 elections.

Protests intensified after the Constitutional Council confirmed the results in December.

SADC executive secretary Elias Magosi underscored the gravity of the crisis, emphasising the need for regional solidarity.

“We must support the people of Mozambique, and assist them in re-establishing a peaceful and prosperous life,” he said.

Hassan highlighted the urgency of collective action, stressing the importance of regional stability.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to what is happening in a fellow member state, especially when it directly affects the region’s socio-economic stability,” she noted.

SADC leaders pledged to employ all necessary mechanisms to support Mozambique in restoring peace and stability.
