President of the Namibia Wrestling Federation (NWF), Colin Steyler, has described the 55 young wrestlers taking part in the Southern African Open Wrestling competition as pioneers who will elevate the sport across the region.
Speaking during the opening ceremony held at the Windhoek Show Grounds yesterday, Steyler praised the commitment of the athletes – both male and female from Under-17 to senior level, representing five countries – host Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Mauritius.
“This is a tournament where we will challenge one another to raise our performance. You are the pioneers of what I hope will transform wrestling into a top-tier sport globally. Let’s ensure this event becomes a recurring fixture on your calendar. Today, we are planting the seeds for Southern Africa to grow as a wrestling region,” he said.
Vincent Aka, United World Wrestling’s Development Officer, expressed optimism for the tournament’s future and its potential to develop the next generation of champions.
“We want to support all federations in building strong wrestling foundations. I may not be around forever, but I’m proud to help establish a legacy. Wrestling gives athletes’ life skills and strength. It starts small, but in time, this event will grow significantly,” Aka noted.
Director of Sport Jo-Ann Manuel lauded the wrestling federation’s collaborative spirit and urged wrestling bodies in the region to formalises their participation in Region 5 to access further government support.
“Southern Africa must become a powerhouse in wrestling,” she emphasised.
The Southern African Open Wrestling competition officially begins Friday and concludes Saturday.
