The Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF), in partnership with Deutscher Turn- und Sportverein (DTS), hosted the first leg of the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Zone Six Beach Volleyball Tour on 21 to 22 February at the DTS Sports Grounds in Olympia, Windhoek.
The two-day event attracted 24 teams from nine countries, all competing for the first-leg title and valuable continental ranking points.
The tournament is part of the regional circuit of the Confederation of African Volleyball, providing athletes with an opportunity to gain exposure and improve their standing on the African beach volleyball rankings.
According to Heiko Kesselmann, beach volleyball coordinator of the local organising committee, the tournament was one of the best in terms of organisation, competition level and overall outcome.
He highlighted the quality of matches displayed throughout the opening day and praised both the players and organisers for delivering a professionally run event.
Among the Namibian teams in action were sisters Romy and Pia Luck, who represented the host nation against strong regional opposition. The local athletes faced stiff competition but demonstrated resilience and determination on home sand. Namibian player Jura Krafft said it meant a great deal for Namibia to host the first leg of the tour, describing it as an honour to represent the country at a prestigious regional event. He expressed hope that Namibia would secure victory in the first leg to showcase the depth of the country’s talent.
“We have been learning from all of our matches. Each game is a learning process, and when we get better, Africa’s quality and progress get better as well,” Krafft said.
At the time of going to print, the final results were not yet available as matches were still ongoing. However, the top three teams at the end of day one had positioned themselves strongly heading into the decisive final matches of the tournament.
