WINDHOEK – The TransNamib Bowls Club won this year’s edition of the Windhoek League a fortnight ago. A second place at the season finale was enough for the team to see off their competitors and clinch the first place in the overall standings with a total of 101 points.
The second overall place went to the Eros Bowls Club while the Windhoek Country Club ended third and the Windhoek Bowls Club in fourth position.
TransNamib had laid out the foundation for its championship win early in the season, when the team won the two opening events in the capital. They could have sealed their victory in the third tournament, but a bad day at the office kicked the league wide open again.
TransNamib then got things underway on the opening day of the last event with a comfortable 77:34 win against the Windhoek Bowls Club. Parallel to their victory, their closest competition from the Eros Club, playing on their home turf, saw a 54:52 win over the Windhoek Bowls Club.
Then, a day later, the two arch rivals went head-to-head in an eagerly anticipated match-up. While TransNamib gave their all, the Eros Club made full use of their home advantage to beat the log leader with 62:44 and thereby keep up the pressure.
In the last match of the tournament TransNamib came up against the Windhoek Country Club, who had won the third tournament after an impressive display of bowls on their home turf. It was a do-or-die situation for the log leader, but they managed to keep their cool to win the game 56:52. The result was eventually enough to keep them at the top ahead of Eros Club who had won their last game 63:39 against the Windhoek Club.
“It was another great year in the Windhoek League. The standard was really high and one must congratulate the TransNamib Bowls Club on their win. They played fantastic throughout the entire season,” the press officer of the Namibian Bowls Association, Lesley Vermeulen, said.
