Tsumeb summit to address youth unemployment

TSUMEB – A summit, aimed at bridging the gap between unemployed youth and prospective employers, will be held in Tsumeb today to address youth unemployment.

The summit is organised by the office of Tsumeb constituency councillor Gottlieb Ndjendjela in conjunction with a group of unemployed youth.

It will target individuals, aged 18 to 35, and will be open to unemployed youth and potential employers.

The councillor told Nampa that the summit will focus on engaging potential employers operating or looking to operate businesses in the Tsumeb constituency.

“That is our aim; we want to reduce unemployment amongst young people in Tsumeb,” he stressed.

Ndjendjela said various positive interventions followed last year’s summit.

“We invited all stakeholders to this summit – and some of them replied positively and kept their promises. One of them was Dundee, who donated N$3 million to be used for an agricultural project in Tsumeb,” he added.

Many young people were likewise employed by local companies like Dundee – either as contract workers or permanently, contributing to mine revamping and participating in cleaning campaigns.

Encouraging the young people of Tsumeb to embrace employment opportunities, Ndjendjela emphasised the nationwide issue of unemployment, urging individuals to seize opportunities when they arise.

Carlos Leonard, one of the Tsumeb youth who proposed the summit to Ndjendjela in 2022, told this news agency that it is pivotal in empowering the local youth.

“Its primary goal is to establish a robust alliance between the youth and key stakeholders from both public and private sectors,” he noted.

Leonard said the summit represents a collective effort to shape a future, where young minds thrive and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic landscape of Tsumeb.

“Our youth have become victims of drugs and alcohol abuse, so we are trying to bring them on track by providing them with jobs,” he added. – Nampa
