Two perish on Election Day

Two perish on Election Day

The body of a five-year-old boy was found in a drum of water when the parents returned from polling stations to cast their votes on election day.

The police in the Ohangwena region reported that the incident happened on 27 November 2024 at about 14h00 at Okambembe B village.

It is alleged that the boy was found drowned in a plastic drum with water.

It is further reported that he and other children were left home alone, while the parents went to the polling stations for the elections.

Upon their return, the boy was not with other children.

Following a search by the parents, one of the minors ran to the smaller garden behind the house where the body was found.

His body was taken to Engela State mortuary, pending autopsy.

The next of kin have been informed, and investigations continue.

In a separate incident, a pedestrian was hit by an Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) vehicle and died instantly in Karibib.

According to the incident report provided by the police, the accident occurred on Wednesday at around 21h00.

The police said the driver of the government vehicle belonging to the ECN was driving from the polling station in Karibib on the way to Windhoek.

According to the driver, he turned back to drop off a document at the polling station that was in the vehicle.

When he was approaching Karibib, he suddenly saw a pedestrian who was crossing the road. Although the driver applied the brake, the car allegedly could not stop immediately and bumped into the pedestrian.

The victim was identified as per his voter’s registration card as Hainghono Pandeinge Shapumba (35).

His next of kin has been informed, and police investigations continue.
