Wood shines as Windhoek Golf Club opens season

The Windhoek Golf Club officially teed off its 2026 club competition season over the weekend with the staging of the ‘Welcome Back Bash,’ a lively event that brought members back onto the fairways in competitive fashion.

Held on 17 January under hot summer conditions, the competition attracted 47 golfers who embraced both the course’s challenge and the spirit of camaraderie that defined the day. The tournament served as a curtain-raiser for the new season, setting the tone for what promises to be a busy year on the local golfing calendar.

Despite the testing weather, players rose to the occasion, producing competitive rounds while enjoying the social atmosphere that followed play. Sportsmanship was evident throughout the day, with golfers exchanging stories of well-earned birdies and narrowly missed par opportunities as they wrapped up their rounds.

The standout performance of the day came from Ian Wood, who delivered an outstanding display to claim top honours with an impressive 41 points. Wood’s consistency and composure across the course saw him emerge as the clear winner, capping off a memorable outing at the opening event of the season.

Borris Erasmus finished a close second with 40 points, while Andre Visser secured third place on 39 points after a strong showing. Llewellyn Husselmann followed in fourth place with 38 points, as the competition remained tight across the top of the leader board.

Alfie Ndyenge and Bertus Damon rounded off the top six, both finishing on 37 points, with countback separating the two. The closely contested results reflected the competitive nature of the field and the high standard of golf on display.Club officials expressed satisfaction with both the turnout and the event’s overall success, noting that the ‘Welcome Back Bash’ once again fulfilled its role of bringing members together and reigniting competitive golf after the festive break.

Attention now turns to the upcoming ‘Members versus Committee club competition,’ scheduled for this coming weekend, as the Windhoek Golf Club continues its 2026 programme with another eagerly anticipated.
