ONGWEDIVA – A couple from Ongwediva is set to appear in court today after they allegedly assaulted their niece and a nephew for a horrifying five years.
Although the incidents took place between 2018 and 2023 in Ongwediva, the arrest took place only recently at Ohadiwa village in Ohangwena region, where the couple owns a homestead.
According to the police’s Head of Crime Investigative Unit, Deputy Commissioner Zachariah Amakali, the alleged crime came to light when one of the victims’ teachers notified authorities that his learner – a 10-year-old boy – had broken teeth.
Upon questioning the boy, he allegedly narrated to his teacher that he and his 14-year-old sister endured physical abuse at the hands of their uncle and his wife for five years.
It is alleged the suspects threatened the victims not to tell anyone about the series of assaults. Police investigations in the matter continues.
Amakali has urged members of the public to report incidents of domestic violence and child abuse to any nearest police station, church leaders or traditional leaders.
Last month, police in the Oshikoto region arrested a couple from the Omuntele constituency for allegedly assaulting and unlawfully imprisoning their orphaned nine-year-old granddaughter.
The accused were released on warning bail after appearing at the Ondangwa magistrate’s court.
