ONGWEDIVA – Two Oshakati police officers were arrested last week for allegedly receiving a bribe of N$2 700 to make false statements about an accident.
Oshana police spokesperson Thomas Aiyambo said the two officers, a woman aged 33 and a 43-year-old man, were arrested last Thursday for corruptly using their office or position for gratification, and fraud.
It is alleged that the suspects conspired to complete an accident report (Pol 66) for a certain member of the public whose motor-vehicle was involved in an accident while being driven by someone else.
Aiyambo said the suspects allegedly made false statements for someone who intended to claim benefits for a third-party injury from an insurance company. In return, the officers received an initial amount of N$1 700, to which another amount of N$1 000 was added later by the claimant as a reward to the officers for adding or omitting certain information on the report.
He added that the male suspect “induced, incited or commanded the other officer to directly complete the Pol 66”.
The male suspect was operating at the Oshakati police station, while the 33-year-old female suspect was at the Criminal Investigations Unit.
The two are expected to appear in court this week.
Meanwhile, a case of fraud, forgery and uttering is being investigated after four men were arrested for buying goods with forged documents in Ondangwa last week.
According to Aiyambo, the alleged syndicate of fraudsters was arrested during a sting operation.
He said the suspects were allegedly trying to buy alcohol from CIC (Pty) Ltd with an alleged fake proof of payment, which was forged to look as if it was processed by First National Bank Namibia.
The four suspects, aged 34, 29, 39 and 42 were arrested at the Olunkono Complex after the case was reported by the manager of CIC (Pty) Ltd.
Aiyambo said they took 24 bottles of Jägermeister (750ml) and 48 bottles of Jack Daniel’s (750ml), worth N$22 808.09.
The suspects were formally charged, and are expected to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court this week.
