Nine suspects have been arrested after recent armed robbery cases at Okahandja Shopping Mall and the Agra outlet last week. According to deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the suspects were arrested in the areas of Windhoek and Okahandja on Wednesday afternoon.
Shikwambi explained that the two separate incidents happened on Friday and Monday respectively.
On Monday, according to Shikwambi, at Agra Okahandja, a 27-year-old security guard was taking money from Agra DIY to
Agra Main Store, when he was attacked by three male suspects unknown to him.
“The guard wrestled with the three men and in the process was stabbed with a knife on the back. It is further alleged that the second guard, aged 49, who was armed with a pistol then shot three rounds at the getaway car and it seems one of the robbers was shot. The getaway vehicle, a silver Volkswagen hatchback without number plates, sped off with N$524 726 in cash,” she said.
Shikwambi said among the nine suspects arrested were a suspect with a gunshot wound on the left upper shoulder, linking him to the Agra robbery. “He was subsequently taken to Okahandja State Hospital where the medical doctor who attended to the suspect confirmed that a bullet was stuck in his shoulder,” she said.
Shikwambi further said the other suspects aged 26, 27 and 28 were arrested in Okahandja on Wednesday, 19 January while a 27-year-old man, who is reported to be the owner of the vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime, was also arrested in Karibib the same day.
The second incident occurred at Okahandja Shopping Mall when a 68-year-old went to the mall with his employee to deposit N$30 830 at a local bank in Okahandja. ljason@nepc.com.na
It is alleged that while getting out of the car, three unknown men ran towards them grabbed the bag of money and drove away in a silver Polo.
Shikwambi said the public is encouraged not to reveal their banking intentions to anyone whatsoever to prevent inside jobs or syndicates aimed at targeting them.
