Carol //Garoes, a key figure in the development of netball in Africa, shared her thoughts on the evolution of the sport, particularly in relation to men’s netball, during an interview at the Africa Netball Cup.
//Garoes, who played a pivotal role in introducing men’s netball to Namibia and other African countries during her tenure as president of Netball Namibia, expressed pride in the strides the sport has made, especially since the men’s version was reintroduced.
“When I was the president of netball, I introduced netball for men in the country,”
//Garoes said. “It wasn’t an easy task, and at one point, it faded. But it came back so strongly today is truly heartening. The standard of play has risen so much, and it’s clear that with a consistent league, our national teams can continue to grow and achieve even more.” //Garoes’ leadership in netball extends far beyond Namibia. She has also served as the president of the Confederation of Southern African Netball Associations and the president of the Confederation of African Netball. Her tireless work to promote and improve netball has earned her recognition across the continent.
Reflecting on the ongoing Africa Netball Cup 2024, //Garoes praised the event’s organisation, and the high level of competition on display. “The tournament was well-organised, and it’s great to see so many teams participating. Every time I attend, I see the standard of play improve. The players are showcasing their skills, and it’s clear that netball is growing in strength across Africa.” “What we need now is a regular league structure to ensure players stay consistent and continue to improve. With that, the sky’s the limit for our national teams,” she added.
