Khomas Nampol Ladies’ striker Penomwameni Shange Ishiwa, the current top scorer in the FNB Women’s Super League (WSL), has expressed her ambition to one day win the Golden Boot award.
She currently leads the goal-scoring charts with 13 goals, just one behind last season’s top scorer Fiola Vliete of Beauties.
Vliete is seated at 12 goals in what has been an intense race for the Golden Boot.
When asked about the key to her impressive form this season, Ishiwa credited her team’s collective effort.
“I think we have a solid team that works together. A lot of our players understand the importance of teamwork over individual effort. That has really contributed to me being the leading scorer this week. All the credit should go to the team – not just me,” she said.
Reflecting on her football journey, Ishiwa shared that her passion for the sport began at the age of four.
However, her parents were initially against her playing soccer.
Despite their disapproval, she remained determined to pursue her dream.
Financial struggles made it difficult for her to attend training sessions.
“It was a difficult journey. I didn’t receive instant support from my parents when they found out I was into football. I had to hide my love for the sport because it was the only thing I wanted to do at the time. Eventually, with the help of some friends and family, who believed in my potential, I got my breakthrough. I was taken in by my current team. I am grateful for the opportunity,” she recalled.
Now 25 years old and competing in the topflight league for the first time, she is determined to finish the season as the league’s top scorer.
When asked how she feels about leading the goal-scoring chart, she admitted she was both excited and surprised.
“It’s not going to be easy, but my goal for this season is to finish as the top scorer. Right now, it’s a blessing to be leading the charts. We have very talented players in the league, many of whom are better than me. So, to be in this position is just unbelievable,” she said.
Meanwhile, Khomas Nampol head coach Novata Paulus praised her players for maintaining their dominance, expressing confidence that Ishiwa could win the Golden Boot.
“I’m happy for her, and I believe the team’s collective effort has contributed to her good-scoring form. As a coach, I fully support her. I hope she remains consistent throughout the season,” Paulus said. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
