The City of Windhoek has reminded residents and visitors that it is legally forbidden to smoke in public areas.
The spokesperson, Nevia Kwenani, stated that the prohibition includes all forms of smoking, such as covers, pipes, cigars, cigarettes and vaping.
“A 2m distance away from public places, for smokers to smoke, must be maintained. Therefore, the owners are required to display clear and visible ‘No smoking’ signage and enforce the regulations within the premises,” said Kwenani.
Kwenani further stated that it is important for all people to continue to commit to safeguarding the health and well-being of the public.
According to Kwenani, in places like indoor workplaces, public transport and vehicles used for public hire, smokers are also not allowed to smoke. She also stated that smoking in educational institutions, healthcare centres, government buildings, restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatres, sports stadiums, shopping malls and any other enclosed substantial area accessible to the public is prohibited, except in designated smoking areas compliant with the law.
Violations of the Tobacco Products Control Act may result in fines or penalties. Repeated violation may lead to the council withdrawing, refusing to renew or denying the issuance of a certificate of fitness by the council.
