Student leaders from the National African Students Association (NASA) will assist learners in preparing for upcoming examinations.
As part of their campaign, the team will be donating school supplies, clothes and shoes to learners in need this October.
The team is led by Lukas Ndeshipanda Haipinge, an academic officer for the Khomas region and chairperson of the NASA Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) branch.
They aim to reach learners in informal settlements who are struggling with basic school needs.
“This is the time when most learners face challenges. Some do not have enough stationery to write exams. Others lack even clothes or shoes. We want to help them focus on their education without these extra worries,” said Haipinge.
The team is targeting learners from grades 4-9, with Mount View High School and Dr Abraham Iyambo Primary School being considered for this year’s donations.
Haipinge said October is suitable for the campaign because learners will be preparing for examinations.
Some children miss examinations because they cannot afford the study materials.
“This can deeply affect their futures,” he added.
Haipinge highlighted how poverty, especially in homes with multiple children, can lead to learners suffering in silence.
“Community support is not only welcomed but also critical. Some children don’t speak up. This can lead to school dropouts and even suicide. We want to prevent that,” he said.
NASA previously ran a similar initiative last year, donating essential items like sanitary pads to the NUST clinic.
This year, the team hopes to go further and reach more children.
They now face financial challenges. “We need sponsors to expand our efforts,” Haipinge said.
Despite this, the group remains hopeful and determined.
“Our long-term goal is to support every Namibian child. We want to make sure no learner is left behind because of poverty. With more support, we believe we can make a big difference,” highlighted the student leader.
The group is calling on community members, businesses and organisations to help by donating items or funds.
