Standout performances at Khomas Championships

The Khomas Senior Athletics Championships took place at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek last Saturday, bringing together more than 200 male and female athletes to compete in a full programme of track and field events.

Athletes battled for top honours in the 5 000m, hammer throw, high jump, 400m hurdles, discus, 1 500m, shot put, 200m, 100m, long jump, 800m, javelin, 400m and the 4x100m relay. The event attracted participants from eight regions, with more than 15 clubs represented, highlighting the depth of athletics talent within the Khomas Region and beyond.

One of the standout performances of the day came from Tuuliki Angala of the Namibia Correctional Service, who won the women’s 800m event. In a bold move, Angala opted to compete in the men’s race to challenge herself against stronger competition and push her limits.

“I did not run with the ladies because they are too slow. I ran with the men because they are faster and they can push me to be faster,” Angala explained.

Event organiser Leoni van Rensburg described the championships as one of the region’s key fixtures on the athletics calendar, noting that another event is scheduled for later this month as preparations continue for upcoming national competitions.

“One of the highlights of the day was Karsten Diergaardt, who finished first in the men’s high jump, and Lionel Coetzee, who came first in the long jump. Every event went well and I think it was a very good platform for the athletes, officials and clubs,” Van Rensburg said.

The championships not only showcased emerging and established talent but also provided athletes with valuable competition ahead of major events later in the year.
