Vendors, students remember Isaacks

Street vendors and students who frequented Independence Avenue say the area has lost a familiar and friendly presence following the death of 28-year-old Julianna Jennifer Isaacks, popularly known as Monica.

Isaacks’ decomposed body was discovered in bushes on 31 January near the University of Namibia’s main campus. Police later confirmed her identity through DNA testing after initially appealing to the public for assistance.

The cause of death remains unknown.
Around Shoprite in the central business district, where Monica was often seen interacting with vendors and passersby, those who knew her described her as a young woman who easily connected with people.

Street vendor Sihle Mangwiro, 44, said Monica was well known among traders in the area.
“She was just a good person, very open with people. Even when she was frustrated, she would talk to us, and we would laugh together,” she said.
Mangwiro recalled that the last time vendors saw her was shortly after the New Year.

“She came around the second week of January, around the 14th or 15th, just to greet us and wish us a happy New Year. After that, we never saw her again. Monica, rest in peace. We really miss you,” she said.
Ndafimana Shikololo, 30, who also sells along the busy street, said Monica maintained friendly relations with both vendors and students.

“She used to connect with everyone. She was a happy person who liked jokes. When we heard the news, we were hurt because she was our friend,” he said.
According to Shikololo, Monica was also trying to build a small business.

“Sometimes she would come here hustling. She would buy items from cosmetic shops and come sell them here,” she said.

A student from the International University of Management (IUM) said Monica was known for her warm personality.
“She was caring and loving. Every time she saw you, she would complement you. It’s sad,” the student said.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Isaacks’ death are ongoing.
