Mahindra’s all new Scorpio N raises the game

I slid behind the wheel of the Mahindra Scorpio N with a fair amount of curiosity and, if I’m honest, a bit of scepticism.

Over the years, Mahindra & Mahindra has steadily worked to reshape its image from a purely utilitarian brand into one that can compete on quality, refinement and technology.

This test drive of the all-new Scorpio N felt like a moment of truth.

First impressions count, and the Scorpio N, courtesy of Mahindra Motors Namibia, makes a bold one. It looks purposeful, muscular, upright and unapologetically SUV. But what struck me more than the design was the sense that this vehicle is part of a broader evolution. Mahindra is clearly making significant progress as a quality and reliable brand, and the Scorpio N feels like a confident statement of that ambition. Pushing the start button, I was immediately reminded that this is no ordinary SUV. Under the bonnet sits a 128.6 kW mHawk all-aluminium diesel engine pushing out an impressive 400 Nm.

Out on the open road, the Scorpio N settles into a comfortable rhythm. The engine doesn’t just offer brute strength, but it delivers it smoothly and predictably. There’s a reassuring sense of durability here, the kind that suggests this SUV is built to go the distance, whether on long highway stretches or rougher terrain. That reputation for reliability, long associated with Mahindra, remains intact, but now it’s paired with noticeable refinement.

Fuel economy is another area where the Scorpio N quietly impresses. While large SUVs are not typically associated with frugality, this one makes a strong case for itself. Throughout the drive, I found the fuel consumption to be surprisingly reasonable, especially considering the vehicle’s impressive performance and the fact it is a massive seven-seater. For buyers who want capability without constantly worrying about the fuel gauge, this is a meaningful advantage.

Inside the cabin, the transformation is even more evident. Gone are the days when Mahindra interiors felt basic and purely functional. The Scorpio N embraces increasing technological inclusion in a way that feels both modern and practical.

The infotainment system is intuitive, the displays are crisp, and there’s a clear effort to enhance the overall driving experience through smart features rather than gimmicks.

I particularly appreciated the driving position, which is commanding yet comfortable. Visibility is excellent, reinforcing that classic SUV feel, while the seats provide ample support for longer journeys. There’s a sense that the cabin has been designed with real-world usability in mind, rather than just ticking boxes on a spec sheet.

One of the standout features during my drive was the transmission. Both engine options are paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox and, importantly, come equipped with segment-first ‘shift-by-cable’ technology. In practice, this translates into smoother, more precise gear changes.

Whether I was navigating city traffic, accelerating onto the highway or traversing Namibia’s gravel roads, the shifts felt refined and responsive, adding a layer of driving comfort that elevates the overall experience.

Of course, no test drive is complete without pushing the vehicle a little. When I did, the Scorpio N responded with confidence. The power delivery remained consistent, and the chassis felt composed, even when the road conditions became less forgiving. It’s clear that this SUV is not just about straight-line performance but is engineered to handle a variety of driving scenarios with ease.

What stood out most, however, was the balance. The Scorpio N manages to combine rugged capability with everyday usability. It’s tough enough to live up to the Scorpio nameplate’s legacy, yet refined enough to appeal to a more modern, urban buyer. That duality is not easy to achieve, but Mahindra seems to have found the sweet spot.

As I handed back the key on Monday, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far the Mahindra brand has come. The Scorpio N is more than just a new model; it’s a clear indicator of Mahindra’s trajectory. Improved quality, better technology, strong performance and genuine attention to efficiency all come together in a package that feels significantly competitive in today’s market.

For me, this test drive answered an important question. Yes, Mahindra is evolving, and the Scorpio N is proof that the brand is not just keeping up, but actively raising its game.
