Swapo mourns loss of young leader

Namibia has lost one of its rising political leaders following the sudden death of Swapo Party Hardap Regional Coordinator, Joplin !Gontes, on Monday, a loss described by Vice President Lucia Witbooi as a “deep sense of national loss”.

In a statement issued yesterday, Witbooi said the passing of !Gontes has left a major gap in both the ruling party and the country’s development efforts.

“It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of national loss that we mourn the passing of our dedicated and committed Swapo Party Regional Coordinator,” Witbooi said.

!Gontes, who served as Hardap Regional Coordinator since 2022, was praised for her strong leadership and close work with communities.

“She will be remembered as a committed and principled cadre whose leadership embodied resilience, discipline, and an unwavering dedication,” Witbooi said.

The Vice President highlighted that !Gontes played a key role in rebuilding the party’s strength in the Hardap region, leading efforts that resulted in Swapo reclaiming the region in the 2025 Regional and Local Authority Elections.

“This achievement stands as a testament to her political clarity and ability to mobilise and inspire collective action,” she added.

Witbooi described !Gontes, as a leader who valued unity, consultation and service to the people, noting that her leadership style was inclusive and hands-on.

Her death, Witbooi said, is not only a loss to the Swapo Party but to the entire nation.

“Namibia has lost a promising leader with a deep sense of duty and purpose,” she said.

She called on party members and the nation at large to remain united and honour the legacy of the late leader.

“In solidarity with the family and fellow comrades, let us remain united in purpose and spirit during this time of profound loss,” Witbooi urged.

Witbooi also extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues.

“May the Almighty grant comfort and strength to the family, comrades and loved ones during this period of grief,” she said.

She concluded by wishing the late !Gontes eternal peace, saying her service and contribution to the nation will be remembered.
