Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has commissioned a temporary containerised mobile home structure in Okuryangava, Katutura, as part of a broader national rollout program to expand footprints with the sole purpose of improving accessibility and bringing services closer to high-density areas.
Although temporary, the structure is projected to serve the residents in this high-density area and is expected to operate for the next four months in its current location, while MTC is busy with the construction of a more permanent fixture, pending approval and compliance within the same locality by the end of September 2026.
Acknowledging the move, Tim Ekandjo, MTC’s chief marketing, communications, branding and sustainability officer, said “whilst plans for a more robust permanent fixed mobile home are in place in Okuryangava, we realised we still need to have a presence at this important vicinity to ensure that our services are accessible to the community, whilst we are finalising our plans for a more permanent structure.”
Ekandjo noted that Windhoek’s population, according to the latest national census, now stands at approximately 537 000 residents and is projected to grow by an estimated 17 600 people annually, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 3.39%.
He added, “These figures are more than just statistics, but a reflection of a rapidly expanding customer base within one of Katutura’s busiest and most active commercial catchment areas, which continues to attract high volumes of commuters, shoppers, and residents daily. Against this backdrop, the introduction of the mobile home concept is aimed at bringing much-needed telecommunications services closer to the community, improving accessibility, convenience, and helping to bridge existing service gaps within the growing area.”
The temporary mobile home will serve community needs, operational efficiency, and the overall value the initiative can bring to residents and surrounding businesses. It will also provide an opportunity for MTC to engage directly with the community and better understand how mobile homes can best support the communities.
The shop will offer services such as high-speed Wi-Fi, mobile plans, services, and business solutions. The milestone reinforces MTC’s expansion strategy across urban centres, semi-urban, peri-urban, and emerging growth points, supporting its mission of connecting communities and enabling digital access as part of the company’s strategies, highlighted Ekandjo.
