A 47-year-old minibus driver allegedly found in possession of N$22 214 worth of cannabis was granted N$20 000 bail when he last Friday appeared in the Tsumeb Magistrate’s Court.
Lukas Gabriel was allegedly caught with 47 parcels of cannabis weighing 7.88 kg following a police search at the Oshivelo checkpoint on Thursday.
He faces a charge of dealing in cannabis.
Detective Chief Inspector and Acting Chief Regional Coordinator, Chief Inspector Edna Nawa, said the minibus was travelling from the north when the police at the Oshivelo checkpoint stopped and searched the vehicle, in which they found the bundles of cannabis.
Nawa said it is not really known where he was headed to at the time of the arrest.
“The police asked the passengers to step down to search the bus and that is when the 47 parcels were discovered in the bus. The driver was arrested on the spot.”
Nawa said that while cannabis dealing is rife in the region, the police usually only confiscate small volumes and not necessarily such big consignments.
Nawa cautioned the nation to desist from using unlawful prohibited substances such as drugs.
