WINDHOEK – The town of Omaruru will be a hive of activity when the much-anticipated 2nd edition of the annual Chief Christian Eerike Zeraeua Cup gets underway on the 4th-5th of next month, at the Maboke Stadium.

The tournament, which features football and netball teams, was officially launched last year with the aim of commemorating the well-lived life of late chief Christian Eerike Zeraeua of the Zeraeua Traditional Authority.

The tourney also seeks to target the empowerment of the town’s youth, especially the unemployed and school dropouts, by providing them an opportunity to engage themselves with activities that will positively impact their lives, rather than spend their time on unproductive things.

The competition has become one of the fast-growing annual events on the Namibian sporting calendar and this year organisers have decided to make it bigger and better by increasing the overall prize monies from N$30 000 to a handsome N$40 000, courtesy of sponsors Bucks Construction and Cleaning Services cc.

Since it’s an open tournament, organisers have indicated that all interested teams from across the country are welcome to register for participation. All matches will be played at the Maboke Stadium and winners of the football category will walk away with N$14 000 and the 2nd placed finishers N$7 000.

The winner of the netball section is guaranteed N$6 000 and the runners-up take home a consolation prize of N$3 000. Registration will be N$1 500 per team (for netball and football) and accommodation will also be provided for a fee of N$150 per day per team.
